There have been at least 200 translations of the Bible in the past 100 years, designed, we’re told,
to help us better understand the original…or at least the King James version. So isn’t that a worthy project?
For example, I personally find that my parallel bible that has the King James and the Living Bible side-by-side, is helpful
to me.
But to a person who doesn’t really study his or her bible, how does he know which of those 200 or more
versions is a true translation. If, as a recent article claimed, that “half of Christians can’t name the four
Gospels, and a third can’t name the first book in the bible,” would they dig deeper into a version that’s
even easier to read. In fact, that very article said half the people who go to a Christian store to buy a bible, leave without
one, even more confused than when they went in.
And although today’s version may change the word “cubit” to “eighteen inches,”
that’s not going to get you closer to Heaven.
And so my suggestion is that when you feel a deep concern in your mind as to where you’re going to spend
eternity, and that you’ve finally realized that you’re on the wrong path…don’t just blame it on your
conscience. Recognize that the Holy Spirit is dealing with you, wanting you to change your ways to a spiritual plus, instead
of a minus.
And that’s the time to talk to God about it. And as I’ve said so many times before, you do that
by just talking to Him as if He’s sitting there, looking at you. Because He is. Tell Him that with His help, you’re
ready to follow Him. Ask forgiveness for past sins, however large or small, and don’t look back.
Then visit a Bible-believing church, ask the Pastor to recommend a second bible version to go along with a
King James version, and start going to church regularly…not because you’re wanted there, or that you think there’s
a rule about going. Do it because it will help you learn what Christianity is all about, which will help you grow from “milk”
to “solid food,” the way a baby grows. And a Sunday School or Bible Study class will let you ask questions to
help you learn.
If you don’t know where you’d spend eternity if you’d die tonight, you need to make the
change right now. Think about it.
