What about “fate.” Is there such a thing?
Take Elvis. He came along when kids finally had money to spend, and they were tired of singing adult music
like “Stardust” and “Mona Lisa.” Elvis liked to sing, and he was a cross between Black, Country, and
Gospel music. In high school, the other kids just yawned when he sung. Until Sam Phillips at a hole-in-the wall Sun Records
in Memphis decided to let him record a song. The DJ’s played it and you know the rest.
Bing Crosby was just another singer, but he happened along right after the microphone was invented, and his
crooning put singers like Al Jolson and Ethyl Merman out of business..
And recently there was another ferry that capsized and 43 of the 96 persons aboard drowned. The 43 were women
and children, while the 53 persons who lived, were men. Why? because the ferry was overloaded, and while the women and children
were allowed to sit inside, the men had to stand out on the deck, and were about to swim when the ferry went down. Did “fate”
step in to let those men live?
I’ve talked to you at other times about how God is in charge. From individuals to nations, His ultimate
will is going to happen. But since Man has a free will, he can tempt God, and he can change his fate. Heaven or hell as a
goal is his choice. And more than that, there is such a thing as untimely death, Jesus talked of 18 persons who died when
the tower in Siloam fell on them. He noted that they didn’t die because they were greater sinners than those who lived.
And there are untimely deaths; King Hezekiah prayed for, and was given, 15 more years of life, but during that time he saw
his sons made prisoners and murdered.
It boils down to this: There is a time for each of us to die, and by necessity, it’s best that we not
know that date and time. And so if there is one thing every person should do; if you only make one big decision is your lifetime,
it’s to make things right with God so you’re ready to die, or for Christ to come back for you. And your time is
now. Think about it.
