Usually a song has had an inspiration for its being. Something
happened in the writer's life that brought about the writing. I have a song-writing hobby, and that's the case with
me.
Take my song "Christmas Tree." Louise and I had gone to several places over a period of time, looking
for a tree that would fit the place in the house where we wanted to place it. And finally we found the right one. And
later, words and music came to me that went like this:
"We've decorated our Christmas tree...
beneath it, presents for you and for me...
but in all of the bustle, there's one I missed...
I left The Christ off my Christmas list.
He gave me a year full of life and health...
fresh air to breath and enough of wealth...
and with all that the Savior has done for me...
I've spent my time on a...Christmas tree.
What day is that that we're celebrating...
who is this Jesus who stands there waiting...
why so much interest in Christmas trees...
when all that He wants is just this...just me.
Forget the stockings all hung with care...
kneel and remember with Christ to share...
Christians and sinners, alike are we...
we've traded Christ for a...Christmas tree.
Christians and sinners, my prayer, my plea...
is don't trade your Christ for a Christmas tree."
There's a lesson here for all of us...to keep our priorities straight. We
celebrate Christmas to remember Christ's birth. But that's pretty much forgotten, as many folks say "Christmas would
be a good holiday if they wouldn't clutter it up with church stuff."
What a misguided way of thinking! However,
if you only go to church on Easter and Christmas, my prayer is that something will be said during that brief moment that will
open your eyes to the inner peace of living for Christ, and the promise of Heaven to come.
