Mel's Poem
A little bit of me has rubbed off on my daughters. They like Bing Crosby's music, they like to
read, and there's some poetry in them, too. Here's one by Melody that Melody wrote for me on Father's Day, 1993...She
called it "Dad, to Me."
Dad,
to Me
"Young boys, they have their daydreams,
of what someday they'll be
A track star or a pilot, or a sailor on the sea...
Young men, they have
their daydreams,
of what someday they'll be
A preacher or a singer, or a pharmacy degree...
Old men, they live on memories
of dreams to never be
And Dad, he used his daydreams,
to care for Mom and me.
But to me, he was a track star.
He ran me here and there...
Never giving it a worry,
and he never seemed to care.
And to me, he was a pilot,
soaring in the night...
Flying to my rescue,
when ever I felt fright.
o me, he was a preacher,
his Bible by his chair
Telling me the stories
and reading what was there.
To me, he was a singer;
his stage, the kitchen floor
With songs I still remember,
drifting thru my bedroom door.
To me, he never needed dreams,
For I knew just what he'd be...
To me, he would be Daddy.
And that was good enough for me.
Her poem was signed, "Your daughter, Melody"
It
almost made me feel my life has been worthwhile.
